Nicola Kötterl studied contemporary dance and choreography at Etage andTanzfabrik in Berlin as well as the Academy of Theatre and Dance (SNDO) inAmsterdam. Since 2018, she has been studying New Media and Sculpture at theAcademy of Fine Arts in Munich under Prof. Julian Rosefeldt and Prof. AlexandraBircken. From 2019 to 2020, she pursued Media Art through a guest scholarshipat the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG), and from 2023 to 2025, shestudied in the Performance class led by Prof. Alexandra Pirici.
In her artistic practice, situated at the intersection of dance, choreography, andvisual arts, Nicola explores the political dimensions of bodies and movement. Sheplaces particular emphasis on societal perspectives on body images and theirdeconstruction, often incorporating sculptural elements, sound and musicalcompositions into her works.
Nicola’s performances have been presented internationally, including at the Goethe-Institut Paris, MMAG Foundation Amman, Biennale Beirut (2020),Rebonkers Varna, the Museum of Casts of Classical Sculptures, Kunstpavillon, andHaus der Kunst in Munich. She was awarded the 2023 Dance Scholarship and the2025 Debut Funding by the City of Munich. Her works are supported by theDepartment of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich, the Bavarian StateAssociation for Contemporary Dance (BLZT) through funding from the BavarianState Ministry of Science and the Arts, the BerufsverbandBildenderKünstler:innen(BBK), the LfA Förderbank, the Rudolf Augstein Foundation, andthe Goethe-Institut.
